The image processing system has evolved to deliver high resolution and low noise throughout a wider ISO range. The camera depicts the mood of every scene’s surroundings as well as texture of details.
The Exmor R sensor’s back-illuminated, gapless on-chip lens design increases light sensitivity and provides wide dynamic range, despite its high resolution of 42.4MP.
A new front-end LSI and BIONZ X™ boost processing speed and are teamed with the Exmor R™ sensor to deliver up to 15-stop dynamic range at low ISO sensitivity for stills, enabling richer tonal expression.
The standard ISO range has been extended to ISO 100-32000 (expandable to ISO 50-102400), and noise has been reduced by as much as a full stop in the mid sensitivity range.
14-bit RAW format output contains rich tonal information from highlights to shadows, and is available even when shooting in silent or continuous mode.

High-resolution Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder provides natural, high-precision viewfinder image. The functional advantages of an EVF, such as high visibility in darkness and AF capability when using magnified display, is further enhanced for powerful shooting support. For even greater versatility, the α7R III’s small, light body is robust and rigid enough for rugged use.
This high-resolution twice-as-bright electronic viewfinder reproduces fine detail. “Hi” quality mode provides extra-fine views of natural realism on brilliant display.
Capture an instant action with continuous shooting of up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking. Huge data of 42.4MP imaging maintains high image quality that is advantageous for your creative trimming.
AF performance is improved by inheriting the AF performance used in the α9 and applying it optimally, so once the α7R III captures a wild animal that moves unpredictably, it won’t easily let it go.

Compact full-frame lenses provide exceptional low-distortion images, even at wide focal lengths, and allow for beautiful image depth and bokeh.
399 phase-detection AF points covering approx. 68% of image area width and height plus 425 densely positioned contrast-detection AF points improve focus that might otherwise be unachievable.
Thanks to much more responsive, enhanced Fast Hybrid AF, AF speed is up to approximately two times faster under dim lighting conditions.
The AF algorithm inherited from the α9 accounts for two times more precise AF tracking for continuous shooting, even of complex or sudden movement.
With the α7R III, Eye AF evolves with two times more immediate, effective eye detection and tracking, even when shooting a moving portrait subject.
Thanks to enhanced 5-axis in-camera image stabiliser, whenever you want to move and shoot freely, you can rely on the α7R III’s high-resolution performance and mobility, in order to concentrate on the subject without worrying about various types of camera-shake blur.
New stabilisation unit/gyro sensors/algorithms effectively raise 5.5 stops. Five types of camera shake — angular shake (pitch/yaw), X/Y shift, and rotational shake (roll) — are compensated.
This new Pixel Shift Multi Shooting reproduces still images that contain true-to-life detail, texture, colour, and overall atmosphere.
In addition to capability to record stunning high-resolution 4K movies through 5K (15MP) oversampling, the camera features a new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile, supporting instant HDR workflow, that offers wide dynamic range for highly precise and lifelike movie images without colour grading.
You can shoot and internally record 4K movies oversampled from 5K (15MP) equivalent data in Super 35mm format. The results are startlingly beautiful in every detail.
Fast Hybrid AF for movies now autofocuses on subjects throughout an area as wide as the one that applies to stills, and the AF system is very smooth and quick at capturing fast-moving subjects.
The α7R III features S-Log for flexible expression of images in post-production and HLG for instantaneous HDR workflow — a combination that fulfills various HDR production requirements.

- An updated Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF is featured and has a 3.69m-dot resolution for bright, clear viewing in high detail. Both Standard and High-quality settings can be used, depending on the shooting situation, in order to optimize the viewing experience.
In addition to the EVF, a 3.0″ 2.36m-dot rear LCD is also available, which has a touch panel design for intuitive operation and focusing control. The screen also tilts upward 107° and downward 41° to benefit working from high and low angles. - Magnesium alloy chassis assures rigidity, durability, and stability while remaining lightweight. The lens mount has also been improved to better support heavy lenses and the grip rigidity has been improved for more comfortable handholding.
- A durable shutter unit incorporates a coreless motor and brake system that reduces vibrations to better control shutter shock as well as extend its rated lifespan to approximately 500,000 actuations.
- Weather-sealing has been employed to resist dust and moisture for reliable operation in harsh weather conditions.
- Using the same NP-FZ100 battery as the a9, the a7R IIIA has improved battery life and is now rated for approximately 530 shots per charge with the EVF or 640 shots with the rear LCD.
- Dual SD memory card slots allow for flexible file saving and handling and can be configured to partition raw and JPEG files or can be used for overflow recording. One of the card slots is rated to support UHS-II memory cards.
- Integrated PC sync terminal for wired flash sync with strobe packs or wireless radio remotes.
- A USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port has been added, in addition to a micro-USB port, for faster, more reliable tethering support. The USB Type-C connection allows the camera to be charged from the host power source while connected.
- The a7R IIIA features a 3.5mm microphone input jack for compatibility with external microphones. And for users needing more, the camera is also compatible with the Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter for recording professional balanced XLR audio signals with phantom power and adjustable mic/line inputs. For monitoring audio, a 3.5mm headphone jack is available as well as real time audio levels for a visual reference.
- Built-in Wi-Fi enables the a7R IIIA to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera’s shutter.
- Bluetooth connectivity allows for location data acquisition.
