Proving that speed and resolution can indeed coexist, the Nikon D850 is a multimedia DSLR that brings together robust stills capabilities along with apt movie and time-lapse recording. Revolving around a newly designed 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor and proven EXPEED 5 image processor, the D850 is clearly distinguished by its high resolution for recording detailed imagery. The back-illuminated design of the sensor is able to acquire greater detail and clarity when working in low-light conditions, and the sensor also forgoes an optical low-pass filter for improved sharpness. Working in conjunction with the sensor is the EXPEED 5 image processor, which together afford a 7 fps continuous shooting rate for up to 51 consecutive frames, an expandable sensitivity range from ISO 32 to 102400, and 4K UHD video recording using either a DX crop or the entire area of the full-frame sensor. An 8K time-lapse recording mode is also available, as well as additional specialized recording modes for digitizing film negatives and for focus stacking applications. Benefitting the imaging capabilities is an advanced Multi-CAM 20K 153-point AF system, which debuted with the flagship D5 and offers 99 cross-type sensors for refined focusing accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Checking off a number of boxes for multimedia image-makers, the D850 positions itself as not only a high-resolution DSLR but also as a camera for speed, movies, and low-light shooting needs.

Nikon D850 Overview

Excel with the D850’s ultimate combination of resolution, speed, and light sensitivity. Create without limits and deliver without exceptions.

Create without limits. Deliver without exceptions.

Welcome to full-frame FX splendour like you’ve never seen it before. From the studio to the remotest locations on earth.
The D850’s fast, ultra-high-resolution FX-format sensor uses 45.7 megapixels of effective resolution to deliver richly detailed 45.4 MP files. Print ultra-high-resolution images in ultra-large formats. Shoot true full-frame movies at 4K. The back-illuminated CMOS sensor has no optical low-pass filter and incorporates gapless on-chip micro-lenses as well as an anti-reflective coating. Incoming light reaches the photodiodes more efficiently so you get exceptional detail and incredible dynamic range. And the 153-point AF system, inherited from the D5, assures you of the pin-sharp focus and wide coverage you need for ultra-high-resolution full-frame images.

This is what speed looks like at 45.4 MP

Land the award-winning moment with the ultimate combination of speed, detail, and precision. Up to 9 fps burst rates at full resolution. Phenomenal autofocus.
Reveal those all-important seconds with the ultimate combination of power and endurance. The D850 shoots at 7 fps. Or you can shoot at 9 fps when using the optional MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack with the EN-EL18B battery (used in the D5) inserted. You get full resolution images, even when shooting in RAW, and the D5 battery allows up to 1840 shots on one charge (in single-frame release mode, based on CIPA standards). A dedicated AF processor ensures blazing subject recognition when you shoot a high number of frames per second: even small subjects moving at high speed in low light can be tracked with remarkable precision. And the camera’s dual card slot unit lets you use a UHS-II SD card and an XQD card—the fastest combination possible.

This is sensitivity to light, nuance, and expression

Reveal the details hidden in the darkest scenes and the deepest shadows. With a class-leading ISO range of 64–25600, extendable from 32 to 102400 (equivalent).
Experience practically noise-free performance at high ISOs and incredible precision even when you shoot in near darkness. The fast EXPEED 5 processing engine inherited from the D5 ensures masterful image quality across the phenomenally wide ISO range. The sensitive autofocus system performs with incredible precision down to -3 EV across all focus points, and the central point performs at -4 EV (ISO 100, 20 °C/68 °F) . The 180K-pixel RGB sensor and Advanced Scene Recognition system deliver spectacular results down to -3 EV.

This is your work. Done 45.4 million pixels of justice.

Performance is everything. When you pair ultra-high-resolution imaging power with the flexibility to shoot in any environment and adjust to any workflow—you excel.

Creative flexibility. Stamina. Precision. The D850 doesn’t just perform—it takes perfection to a whole new level. You get uncompromised image performance whether you shoot RAW size Large, Medium, or Small. And both the camera and the optional MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack boast extensive weather sealing: you have the freedom to shoot for longer periods, anywhere. This is also the first DSLR ever to feature an in-camera focus-stacking mode for exceptionally sharp images with vast depth of field.

NATURE

Take full advantage of this camera’s monumental resolution and wide ISO 64–25600 range to portray the natural world in staggering detail.

From the savannah to the rainforest, the D850’s full-frame backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor delivers stunningly detailed 45.4 MP images. Gapless on-chip lens architecture maximises the light hitting the sensor, and enables the camera’s stunningly wide ISO and dynamic range. You get the flexibility to shoot in any light, or push the exposure and still get incredible detail. You can film 4K timelapse movies in camera. And the sensor’s 45.7 effective megapixels let you create spectacular 8K timelapse movies in post, after an in-camera interval timer shooting session. Extensive weather sealing means this camera isn’t afraid of harsh environments.

Be silent, sharp, and responsive

Attain exquisite shots of majestic wildlife in natural habitats with Silent Photography mode.
Work unobtrusively and with absolute precision when you shoot in Live View . Silent Photography uses the camera’s electronic shutter to deliver pin-sharp 45.4 MP images with no mechanical blur, at up to 6 fps. And when you’re tracking extremely fast subjects, you can shoot silently at up to 30 fps at 8 MP.

Open up the night

Nocturnal habitats. Astrophotography. With noise-free performance at high ISOs, and metering down to -3 EV, the D850 delivers eye-opening clarity.
The fast EXPEED 5 processing engine ensures remarkable image quality across the wide ISO range of 64–25600 (extendable to ISO 102400, equivalent). The lowest metering limit is -3 EV. And the AF system is sensitive down to -4 EV at the central point (ISO 100, 20 °C/68 °F). You’re free to shoot with full autofocus or auto exposure in near darkness and attain incredible results. The same full button illumination seen on Nikon’s legendary D5 ensures easy handling under the blanket of night.

Nature’s treasures in infinite depth of field

Distant lands. Delicate fossils. Mountainside wildflowers. Achieve vast depth of field from front to back with the in-camera Focus Shift mode.
Bring heart-stopping clarity to natural wonders large and small. The in-camera Focus Shift mode enables focus stacking of up to 300 shots taken at fixed intervals. Or you can work with continuous shooting at up to 5 frames per second for full- resolution images. Set the parameters for your focus-stacking sequence and the D850 gradually shifts focus from the starting point to infinity. You can determine the distance of each focus step from 10 selectable levels. Combine the pictures in post to create images in which every detail, from the foreground to the background, is superbly defined.

Endless universe

Shoot full-frame 4K time-lapse movies in-camera. Create meticulous 8K time-lapse movies in post from in-camera silent interval timer shooting sessions.
Circling stars. Flowing clouds. With 45.7 effective megapixels of resolution and silent interval timer shooting, the D850 is a master of time-lapse movie production. Silent interval timer shooting lets you shoot for long periods without worrying about shutter degradation, mechanical blur, or shutter noise. Auto Exposure mode expands metering down to -3 EV, so you can sharply render starscapes or landscapes—and successfully film transitions from daylight to starry night. The minimum shooting interval of 0.5 s enables smooth footage of shifting cloudscapes and star trails.

FASHION

Go for the big reveal. The magic lies in your personal touch. And in richly detailed 45.4 MP images. This is the ultimate tool for your ultimate work.

Show your style. Loud and clear. With its backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and EXPEED 5 image processor, the D850 offers the ultimate combination of resolution and dynamic range. Image quality is exceptionally clean across the wide ISO 64–25600 light sensitivity range. And dynamic range is exceptional at both high and low ISO values. With 45.7 effective megapixels of imaging power, you can easily reproduce prints of any size and you gain the latitude to work on images in post without sacrificing any detail.

Razor-sharp doesn’t begin to describe it

Too much detail? Impossible. Texture, pattern, colour. It’s all about the detail.
Showcase your flair for your subject in pin-sharp brilliance. When you’re shooting through the viewfinder, the camera’s mechanical vibration control counters the vibrations caused by shutter release and mirror up. You’ll attain razor-sharp 45.4 MP images. And when all needs to be quiet on set, Silent Photography mode lets you shoot at up to 6 frames per second in Live View with no shutter-release sound.

Light. Paint with it.

Every highlight. Every shade of black. With exceptional dynamic range, this camera is your artist’s brush.
The D850 delivers incredible dynamic range across the wide ISO range of 64–25600. You can extend to ISO 32 equivalent at the Lo 1 setting and ISO 108400 equivalent at the Hi 2 setting. The EXPEED 5 processor ensures exceptionally clean output. Metering goes all the way down to -3 EV and the autofocus system boasts sensitivity down to -4 EV (ISO 100, 20 °C/68 °F) at the central point. Benefit from rich tonal definition under the brightest sunlight. Sharply define detail in the deepest shadows. Easily manage reflections or studio LED lights. Or open up the night without the need for additional lighting on location.

Reveal it all

The smallest details. In mesmerising focus. With exceptional pinpoint AF, you can hone in on exquisite elements.
With Pinpoint AF (available in Live View shooting), you can create dramatic visions of tiny details: the logo on a new piece of tech, the texture of a dress. The 8 cm (3.2 in) 2359k-dot touchscreen tilting LCD monitor offers touch shutter-release and autofocus during Live View shooting for freer composition. Quickly confirm shots in stellar detail on the high-resolution, high-contrast display: double tap a portion of any image to see a 100 % view of the image area. The Crop Size Setting menu, also accessible in Live View via the i button, allows you to easily resize and send images to clients on the spot.

The ultimate composition

Subtle reflections. Bold expressions. Get clear, real-time confirmation of the detail you’re framing with the bright 0.75x optical viewfinder.
The viewfinder’s wide field of view and high-resolution, high-contrast display guarantee pin-sharp subject confirmation of every detail. OLED elements ensure shooting information is easily read in any lighting conditions. And mechanical vibration control counters both shutter-release and mirror-up vibrations, effectively minimising the causes of blur. The images you capture will be as sharp as the finder you’re framing them through.

Record true full-frame 4K movies. No crop factor. No noise. No compromises. Give more freedom to the storyteller in you with the Nikon D850.

Do your creative vision justice. With no crop-factor limitations, you can take full advantage of Nikon’s fast prime lenses to create truly cinematic- looking footage.
Super-wide angles and beautifully shallow depth of field: the D850 captures every scene in exquisite detail. You can record full-frame 4K/UHD movies at 30p, and full HD movies at up to 120p. Gapless on-chip lens architecture maximises the light hitting the FX-format sensor, enabling far greater dynamic range and stunningly wide ISO. The fast EXPEED 5 processor ensures beautifully clean files, remarkably free of noise, moiré, and false colour. You can film 4K timelapse movies in camera. And the sensor’s 45.7 effective megapixels let you create spectacular 8K timelapse movies in post, after an in-camera interval timer shooting session.

More data. More flexibility.

With its fast, ultra-high-resolution FX-format sensor, EXPEED 5, and Flat Picture Control, the D850 enables maximum creative freedom when shooting—and in post.
The high-speed FX sensor and fast EXPEED 5 processor ensure incredible dynamic range. You’re free to shoot all the way to ISO 12800 or higher without worrying about noise. And if you’re recording B-roll footage, you can seamlessly merge with footage shot on any Nikon camera that boasts EXPEED 5. In post, the quality of the D850’s files gives you immense freedom in editing, and lets you pull high-quality stills. For the ultimate post-production versatility, you can shoot with the Flat Picture Control setting. You’ll retain all the details and preserve rich tonal information in both highlights and shadows.

Mesmerizing slow motion

Record richly detailed Full HD video at frame rates up to 120p. Capture every nuance with exquisite clarity, even when shooting in dark situations.
Move your audience with incredibly smooth slow-motion footage and stunning light sensitivity. The D850 records 4x slow-motion video at 120/100p frame rates (with playback at 30/25p) or 5x slow-motion videos at 120p (with playback at 24p). Image quality is exceptionally clean across the camera’s ISO range of 64–25600, which is extendable from 32 to 102400 (equivalent). And Auto ISO in [M] mode lets you configure the maximum ISO settings you want to work with: ideal when you want to ensure smooth transitions between dark and bright areas. Or vice versa.

Perfectly sharp

The D850 brings focus-peaking technology to FX-format movie shooting. Get immediate feedback as you rack focus through a scene.
Clearly see what’s in focus when shooting Full HD movies. The camera will detect the edges of highest contrast in your scene and highlight them so you can instantly see which areas are sharp. You can choose between red, white, yellow, or blue highlights, and detection sensitivity is adjustable between three levels. The camera’s high-resolution, high-contrast monitor offers exceptional visibility in any lighting conditions. When connected via HDMI for clean out, peaking information is not recorded on the external device.

Every scene in your hands

With a wide range of touch controls, the high-resolution monitor makes it easy to compose and confirm shots.
Angle the high-resolution, touch-responsive 8 cm (3.2 in) LCD monitor to compose shots from elevations you simply can’t achieve otherwise. You can adjust the monitor’s brightness and/or hue to ensure perfectly clear pre-focusing and shot confirmation in any production environment. Register unique settings for film shooting on the D850’s independent movie menu screen without affecting your existing stills settings, making it easier to switch between modes. Pressing the i button will allow you to access movie settings while the shutter rolls.

Perfectly adaptable

The D850 is easy to travel with and easy to rig. On set or on location, benefit from clean HDMI out, real-time audio monitoring, and an attenuator menu.
The D850 offers clean 4:2:2 8 bit HDMI out, plus simultaneous capture of full-resolution footage in-camera and on an external recorder. Data is output at the designated image size and frame rate, and is clean of the information overlay that can be simultaneously displayed on the camera’s TFT monitor. If the external recording device you’re using is compatible with Atomos Open Protocol, you can sync the start/stop movie recording between devices. A stereo microphone input and audio out let you fine-tune audio levels in isolation both before and during recording. And when you’re filming on location, the new attenuator menu can help you avoid distortion. Simply activate the attenuator and the camera will automatically reduce microphone sensitivity as needed. Ideal in situations in which the ambient audio level can fluctuate unexpectedly.

Longer battery life

Film for over an hour using the camera’s EN-EL15b battery. Shoot for more than three hours using the MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack.
The D850’s energy-efficient power circuit and EXPEED 5 image-processing engine give you more time to shoot between charges. Shoot up to approx. 70 minutes of video from a single charge of the camera’s EN-EL15b battery. Or use the optional MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack (with the D5’S EN-EL18B battery inserted) as a power source and shoot for up to approx. 215 minutes.
